Career Technical Education (CTE)

Mastery of information and communication technologies is the foundation for all successful business organizations today. Persons with expertise in information and communication technologies support and services are in high demand for a variety of positions in business and industry. Students in the pathway prepare for careers that involve the implementation of computer services and software, support of multimedia products and services, provision of technical assistance, creation of technical documentation, and the administration and management of information and communication systems.

These careers include: Computer and Information Systems Manager; Computer User Support Specialist; Database Administrator; Document Management Specialist; Business Intelligence Analyst; and many more.

Persons with expertise in systems development and programming are critical to support operations like electronic commerce, medical records management, retail sales and inventory management, digital entertainment, and use of energy. Students in the Software and Systems Development pathway prepare for careers related to computer science that involve the design, development, implementation, maintenance, and management of systems that rely on software programs to satisfy the operational needs of modern business organizations.

These careers include: Computer Programmer; Software Developer/applications; Information Security Analyst; Web Developer; E-Business/E-commerce Specialist; and many more

Students develop knowledge and skills common to entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship, including the human characteristics vital for entrepreneurial thinking in a twenty-first-century global world. Entrepreneurial thinking may be applied to all industry sectors. The performance indicators provide business knowledge and skills required for entrepreneurs, as well as intangible skills and knowledge such as creativity and innovation skills.

• Computers, Careers & Finance (CCF)

This course will prepare students to be both college and career-ready through technology, career exploration, employability, life, and learning skills. Students will examine how individual choices directly influence occupational goals and future earnings potential. Real world topics will provide a foundational understanding for making informed post-secondary, career, and financial choices.

The business department had adopted many new programs that will inspire our students to be more purpose driven by allowing them to find their career passion and be financially successful.

• Business Technology II

Students will understand technology and information as applied to business situations. They will demonstrate competency by applying their technological skills to meet the needs of employment within an occupational field. Students will also understand information processing concepts necessary to manipulate information and will function in a rapidly changing technological, global society. Students will analyze data and create reports in a table format for use in business and financial applications. Students will be able to produce professional quality documents that combine text, graphics, illustrations, and photographs. Students will be able to sort, find, analyze, and report information on a database. They will demonstrate competency by performing multiple tasks required to effectively process information and produce desired output. In addition, students will understand the obligations and responsibilities of being a sole proprietor and employ ethical behaviors and actions that positively influence others. Students will contribute positively to every team, as both team leaders and team members.

• Virtual Enterprise (VE)

The Virtual Enterprise is a simulated business environment. The VE employees (i.e., you, the students) will be involved in actual "on-the-job" work experiences, including purchasing, sales, marketing, accounting, personnel, etc. The only difference between the VE and an actual business is that no material goods are produced or legal tender exchanged. However, in our case, services will be provided. The VE will generate the documents and information needed to do business with other VEs around the country and abroad. You will work in one or more of the departments in the VE organization. In your department, you will be expected to work individually and as a member of a team to fulfill the responsibilities and tasks associated with your department. You will develop initiative, creativity, responsibility, and enhance oral and written communication skills, and improve your ability to work on a team.

• Career Technical Work Experience Education (CTEWEE)

The intent of CTWEE is to reinforce and extend vocational learning opportunities for students through a combination of related classroom instruction and supervised paid employment. The CTWEE is to develop and refine occupational competencies necessary to acquire paid employment to adapt to the employment environment, and to advance in an occupation. Students enrolled in CTWEE must have a worksite placement or employment that is related to a previous or concurrently enrolled Career Technical Education course of study.

• Food Service & Hospitality (Under Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation)

This pathway program is designed to prepare students for technical training, post secondary education, and entry to careers in the restaurant industry with both academic and technical preparation to pursue high demand and high skill careers in the food service industry. Students pursuing this career pathway have in-depth, hands-on experiences that emphasize industry awareness; sanitation and safe food handling; food and beverage production; nutrition; food service management; and customer service.

• Child Development I

This course is a study of family planning, preparation for parenthood, and pregnancy, and child growth and development from infancy through preschool.This course also includes the care, health, and safety of children, as well as, the importance of their relationships within the family.This prepares students to understand the physical, mental, emotional, social, and moral development of children.Students have an opportunity to experience the symptoms of pregnancy by wearing the Empathy Belly.They also have the opportunity to care for a Real Care Computerized Baby for four days and three nights. Students plan and carry out a hands-on preschool laboratory experience, so that students can have hands-on experience guiding and observing young children in play activities through stories, books, games, toys, art and music.

• Child Development II

This course helps students to understand the history of children in families and society; the findings of major child development theorists, the stages of development; and the roles of parents, caregivers, and those working with children as children grow and develop.Interactions with children are powerful influences in children’s development.Interactions that are enjoyable, supportive, encouraging and rewarding are promoted. Many current issues are addressed; including: child abuse, educational needs, social media, etc.

• Career Technical Work Experience Education (CTEWEE)

The intent of CTWEE is to reinforce and extend vocational learning opportunities for students through a combination of related classroom instruction and supervised paid employment. The CTWEE is to develop and refine occupational competencies necessary to acquire paid employment to adapt to the employment environment, and to advance in an occupation. Students enrolled in CTWEE must have a worksite placement or employment that is related to a previous or concurrently enrolled Career Technical Education course of study.

• Architectural Design (Under Engineering and Architecture)

This Architectural Design pathway provides a foundational education for our students. Students are engaged in an instructional program that integrates academic and technical preparation and focuses on career awareness, career exploration, and career preparation using real-world, occupational experiences. This Architecture program offers the following components: classroom, laboratory, and hands-on contextual learning; project and work- based instruction; and leadership and interpersonal skills development.

Courses offered at Montclair High School which lead to a certificate in the above pathway:

• Architectural Design I

The student will be introduced to architectural design principles including line, forms, values of lines, textures, volume, space, and various art forms to develop interior and exterior living areas. The student will use details and design criteria specific to particular styles of architecture to create homes to specific programs. The student will design several homes using basic sketching and technical drawing techniques incorporating the above principles. The student will use architectural animation software to create presentations and walk-through animations of their structure.

• Architectural/Engineering Design II

Students will continue their study in the fields of architecture, construction, and engineering drawing. The student will develop a set of working drawings for a home, study the history of architecture and construction, develop a set of engineering drawings, learn presentation techniques, as well developing a portfolio. The process from design to finished product will be stressed. The course expands a student’s knowledge of the use of computer aided drafting.

• Architectural Design III/IV

Architectural Drafting provides an opportunity for the vocational/technical architectural drafter and pre-engineer architectural student to acquire depth and proficiency in the preparation and presentation of architectural drawings. Critical thinking, academic application and CAD are integrated essential elements of instruction.

• ROP

This instructional program prepares individuals for a variety of careers related to the field of architecture. In addition to skills necessary to support architects and//or architectural engineers in the development of plans for buildings or other structures while complying with a variety of building codes and zoning laws, staying within cost limitations, and satisfying client preferences.

• Career Technical Work Experience Education (CTEWEE)

The intent of CTWEE is to reinforce and extend vocational learning opportunities for students through a combination of related classroom instruction and supervised paid employment. The CTWEE is to develop and refine occupational competencies necessary to acquire paid employment to adapt to the employment environment, and to advance in an occupation. • System Diagnostics, Service and Repair (Under Transportation)

The Systems Diagnostics, Service, and Repair pathway prepares students for postsecondary education and employment in the transportation industry, which includes but is not limited to motor vehicles, rail systems, marine applications, and small-engine and specialty equipment. Careers associated with this pathway include: Service Technician/Maintenance Worker/Shop Foreman Technical Writer Dispatcher Engineer Investigator/Inspector ; and many more.

• Foods and Nutrition

Students learn basic food preparation skills during units of study that will include safety, sanitation, table etiquette, kitchen equipment and food product evaluation. Emphasis is placed on time management, food preparation, understanding nutritional needs, being a smart shopper and meal planning. Additional areas include the study may include an introduction to food related careers and food production.

• Advanced Culinary

This is a Capstone Course in the Food Service and Hospitality Career Pathway.This course focuses on meal planning and specialty food preparation with an emphasis on basic menu selection, as well as, menus for holiday and entertainment type meals and international cuisine.In addition to these lab opportunities, students will also participate in catering labs (preparing and serving food outside the classroom). This course includes career exploration and an emphasis on careers related to the food service industry.

• Career Technical Work Experience Education (CTEWEE)

This pathway helps meet the growing emphasis on improving education and high staffing needs in the child care industry. Students are prepared to pursue a career in the field of child care and development for infants, toddlers, and young children. Students study child growth and development, safety and emergency procedures, nutrition and health practices, positive interaction and guidance techniques, learning theories, and developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum activities. Students apply this knowledge in a variety of early childhood programs, such as child development laboratories, public and private preschools, family day care settings, and recreational facilities. • Wood Design I

This course is a technical and aesthetic exploration of the design elements and principles using the medium wood. The course will include basic drafting instruction and layout as well as safety and machine use. Students will be instructed in learning various aspects of a shop and woodworking tools. The instruction will include basic rules and guidelines to insure safety, proper operational procedures, names and proper terminology used for each tool, and techniques necessary for quality production. Course meets Fine arts graduation requirements.

• Wood Technology II

This course will further develop knowledge and techniques taught in Wood design I. Emphasis will be on furniture construction and design. Opportunities for personal achievement in project construction are provided.

• Wood Technology III/IV

Cabinet making, design, construction and installation are the emphasis at this level of wood working. Course will enhance student’s ability to work safely with power tools. Upon completion students will be prepared for entry level employment in woodworking industry.
